Bad breath or halitosis can be embarrassing and can affect your self esteem. It is usually caused by food particles left in between the teeth and around the mouth.
Most people don’t even know that they have bad breath. According to a study 1 in 4 people are affected by mouth odor and 50% of the Adult population have bad breath.
One of the most common cause of bad breath is poor oral hygiene. A bacteria know as plaque will begin to grow on your teeth if you don’t brush and floss at least twice a day.
Although most mouth odor is caused by poor oral care, bad smelling mouth could also be a symptom of diseases such as diabetes, lung diseases and liver disease. It may also be as a result of acid re-flux which causes the regurgitation of bad smelling fluid from the stomach.
These easy natural remedies for bad breath can help you get rid of mouth odor and leave your mouth smelling clean and fresh.
1. Brush and floss your teeth after you eat.
- Brushing everyday helps remove food particles and plaque that can harm the teeth over time. Brush using a fluoride based toothpaste at least twice a day, especially after each meal.
- Floss at least once a day. Proper flossing removes food particles and plaque from between your teeth helping control bad breath.
2. Brush your tongue. Bacteria also sticks to the tongue so carefully brushing it may reduce odors. Use a tongue scraper, to help remove dead cells, food particles and bacteria from the tongue. A tongue scraper is a special plastic instrument found in drug stores. You can also buy a toothbrush that has a built-in tongue cleaner.
3. Clean dentures or dental appliances. Clean your dentures and other dental appliances you use thoroughly at least once a day or as directed by your dentist. Ask your dentist to recommend the best cleaning product that will help keep them bacteria free.
4. Drink plenty of water to avoid dry mouth. To keep your mouth moist drink plenty of water. A common cause of bad breath is a dry mouth. The reduction of saliva production causes the growth of odor causing bacteria, this is why you have horrible breath in the morning. Drink water when you wake up and during and after exercising, as these are times dry mouth is most likely to occur.
5. Adjust your diet. Avoid foods such as onions and garlic that can cause bad breath. Eating a lot of sugary foods is also linked with bad breath.
6. Regularly get a new toothbrush. Change your toothbrush when it becomes frayed — about every three to four months.
7. Salt water rinse: a salt water (saline solution) rinse can prevent the buildup of infectious bacteria in the mouth or throat. Salt water’s slight acidity prevents the ‘alkalizing’ environment that encourages the growth of bacteria’s that cause bad breath.
8. Green tea: A study has found that green tea reduces bad breath due to its antibacterial and deodorant action. This is probably due to the actions of the polyphenols, antioxidants it contains. You can try drinking up to 3 cups of green tea per day.
9. Baking soda:
Baking soda can effectively kill bacteria in the mouth. Research shows that toothpastes containing high level of baking soda can adequately reduce bad breath. Mix a cup of water with a teaspoon of baking soda (which changes the pH level and fights odor in the mouth) and a few drops of antimicrobial peppermint essential oil or tea tree oil. Don’t swallow it! Store the remaining mixture and use after each meal or as the need arises.
10. Aloe Vera: Aloe Vera can help for a few reasons. It is a natural anti fungal and antibacterial. It also helps to protect the sensitive tissue in the mouth. It will help to kill the bad bacteria as well as fight tooth decay.
- 1/2 cup distilled water
- 1/2 cup aloe Vera gel
- 2 tsp baking soda
- 2 drops tea tree essential oil
- 2 drops peppermint essential oil
Add all these ingredients in a jar and mix them together. Before each use, shake thoroughly and gargle about 2 teaspoons when using it.
Combine this method with a good brushing routine, you should have everything you need to keep your mouth healthy, fresh and clean.
11. Ginger:The antimicrobial properties of ginger help to eliminate bad odor as well as different types of oral and throat infections.
- teaspoon ginger juice
- A glass of warm water
- Grate and sieve the ginger root to extract fresh juice.
- Add this juice to warm water and rinse your mouth with it.
Do this after each meal, and then, once every few days to keep bad breath at bay.
I recommend you try all these natural remedies for bad breath. However, if your bad breath persists, you need to see your dentist. They will then investigate the cause of your bad breath.
