Dry skin occurs when the skin doesn’t retain moisture sufficiently. This can happen due to a number of environmental factors or certain diseases. Some of the causes of dry skin includes:
- Hot baths and showers
- Heat
- Weather
- Sun exposure
- Harsh soaps
- Other skin diseases
The following dry skin remedies will help soothe, relieve and hydrate dry skin.
Dry Skin Remedies
Olive oil massage
Olive oil has a moisturizing quality which nourishes the skin. It is known to contain a lot of antioxidants and fatty acids. These are some of the nutrients that your skin needs to stay hydrated. Olive oil can help the skin become more moisturized and at the same time, it can also help soothe the skin all over. Add five tablespoons of olive oil into your daily moisturizer to help relieve dry skin, do this after every bath.
Moisturize daily
Apply moisturizer immediately after bathing or washing your hands. Moisturizing is one of the dry skin remedies you have to imbibe for a healthy and soft skin. This helps plug the spaces between your skin cells and seal in moisture while your skin is still damp.
Limit your bathing to one 5- to 10-minute bath or shower daily. If you bathe more than that, you may strip away most of the skin’s oily layer and cause it to lose moisture. Use lukewarm rather than hot water, which can wash away natural oils. Warm water will improve the amount of moisture on your skin.
Apply moisturizer within three minutes of leaving the bathroom. Avoid highly perfumed moisturizer because they dry out the skin.
Sun protection
Avoid sun damages on your skin by wearing a broad spectrum SPF 30 sunscreen. Sun damage is one of the main cause of dry skin and wrinkles, but dressing right and applying a sunscreen can help prevent this.
Humidify
Cold dry air is a common cause of dry and irritated skin. Heating your house during the winter keeps you warm, but it also removes moisture from the air, which can make dry skin even more parched. To replenish moisture quickly and easily, use a humidifier.
Coconut oil dry skin remedy
Coconut oil is known for its healing, antibacterial, and cleansing properties. It is one of the best topical treatments for dry skin. When you rub coconut oil into your skin, it’s absorbed very slowly, taking in every last drop of moisture. If you’ve got eczema or psoriasis, coconut oil helps with those conditions too.
Apply coconut oil on your dry skin after you take a bath or shower. When the skin is warm and supple from your bath, coconut oil is more readily absorbed. Do this daily for best effect.
Healthy fat
Foods rich in omega-3 essential fatty acids help heal dryness and preserve your skin’s natural oils, Hydrate skin from the inside by eating a serving of one of these daily:
- Walnuts
- Flax-seed
- Almonds
- Salmon
Aloe Vera hydration dry skin remedy
Aloe vera helps in rehydrating the skin and also naturally reduces redness and inflammation. To use, break off a leaf from an aloe vera plant and rub the clear, sticky sap all over your face. Leave it on for 15 minutes, then rinse off. For best results, apply an aloe mask once or twice a week. Avoid packed aloe vera gel. It’s not always pure aloe vera, it often contains other ingredients, which may cause your skin to dry out further. Aloe vera gel that comes straight from the plant is pure, and thus the most beneficial.
